This piece started as a drawing for painting- typically rather than working directly from a photo reference I will do studies and drawings from various reference images before distilling these images down into a painting.

Framed artwork of a woman's face with closed eyes, sketched in red lines, hanging on a white textured wall.

Gone Fishin’

The reference image here is a still from a film Go Fish, from the moment an extra walks on screen that looks eerily like me, or my idea of ‘me’ at least.

She isn't credited and is only on screen for a few frames- so mysterious!

I had the stills saved in my phone for a year before conceiving of this piece, one of many curios
brought out to
illustrate stories
told at pubs and
dinner parties.

Who is that?

A family gathered around a dinner table, eating and talking in a cozy dining room.

As I worked on the drawing I investigated the features of my doppelganger- no single one a carbon copy of me but somehow in relation to each other my face starts to emerge.

When I felt I had gleaned all there was to glean I sat back and realised that somehow she didn't look as like me as I had first thought.

As an experiment I decided to try redrawing some features to look more similar to mine, on tracing paper so that I could compare with the initial drawing.

Close-up of a person's face drawn with red pencil on a white background.

After leaving it my desk for a few days while working on other studies I realised

Maybe the interplay between these two layers is more intriguing than the painting that I have been working towards

That painting never did quite come together

How can I display this?

Magnets?

I did use the magnet technique with a similar experimental piece, I think it is effective in the context of a group show in which
how and where the work
is hung is the focus as
much as the work is.

A drawing of a butterfly and a face attached to an orange fabric with four magnets, with a window in the background.
A simple pencil sketch of a person's face in profile, showing closed eyes, a nose, and lips, with light shading on the face and hair.
